Gifts For New Baby

What are the best gifts for new baby? It can be hard to choose, especially when you don’t know if the baby is a boy or girl, or what the expecting parents have already bought. At the moment it feels like all my friends and family are having babies at the same time. Last year I gave birth to my own little one, a girl named Hannah. After attending baby shower after baby shower, here are my tips for choosing the gifts that will be most appreciated by Mom, Dad and baby.

Don’t Buy Gender Specific

Never buy gender specific gifts for new baby, even when the parents know the sex. There are still instances when parents are told the wrong gender, especially early in pregnancy. Keep in mind that parents may not have told everyone they know what the gender is, imagine giving away their surprise to a group of guests!

If you are buying clothes as gifts for new baby stick to colors like pale blue, yellow, mint and white. There are plenty of baby basics like booties, singlets and jumpsuits which are made for boys or girls to wear.

Think About What The Family Needs

Gifts for new baby need to be functional. When Hannah was born I received about 12 sets of 0000 and 000 clothing. The problem was that she was into 00 size at one month old. Most of the gifts people bought me never got worn by Hannah, instead I took them to good will. The same applies to toys.

Instead of buying gifts for new baby that will only work for a newborn, buy something that will be practical at six months or even one year old. A nice warm jacket for winter, a set of building blocks, or an outfit for special occasions for instance. A relative who didn’t know any better bought Hannah a doll suited for a 3 or 4 year old. They meant well, and I have simply put it in a cupboard for now. I am sure she will get much enjoyment out of it in years to come.

Parents Deserve a Gift Too

Buying gifts for new baby is always fun, baby toys and clothes are always adorable. Don’t forget about the parents though! Sometimes they need a treat too. Perhaps along with your gift for the baby you might like to include something the parents may enjoy. A DVD, a massage voucher or even a simple box of chocolates are all great ideas. Sometimes the smallest sentiments are the most appreciated.

Creative Gifts

Gifts for new baby don’t have to be traditional. Don’t be afraid to think outside the square. Some more creative gifts I received when Hannah was born included a picnic basket and a children’s cook book. These are gifts that we use now and will for many years to come. They are also things that I would not of thought I buying for myself.

Whatever gifts for new baby you decide on make sure you give it plenty of thought. Think about what gifts will get the most use and will be appreciated the most by the whole family.
